EASTERN CAPE

South Africa’s second largest province, the Eastern Cape is the poorest province and has a poverty headcount of 12.7% in the 2016 South African Multidimensional Poverty Index. Known as the birth and resting place of President Nelson Mandela, Its economy is driven by the automotive sector, agriculture and tourism. In spite of this, in the Eastern Cape, the intensity of poverty is at 43.3%.
