Food Security in the area
Freedom Farm is a longstanding informal settlement near the intersection of Robert Sobukwe Road and Stellenbosch Arterial, housing approximately 2,000 residents. Many have lived there for decades, facing significant challenges such as limited access to electricity, water, and sanitation. Unemployment is high, and a large portion of children are not attending school. The community’s leadership, though newly established, has been stable. A pressing issue is the prevalence of chronic and hidden hunger among residents, due to limited access to nutritious food and sustainable income sources. This lack of access to healthy diets contributes to the double burden of malnutrition and obesity, negatively impacting the overall health of the community.
