Food Security in the area

The locality Helenvale suburb of Port Elizabeth is located in the district of Nelson Mandela Bay in the province of Eastern Cape (EC), South Africa. Helensvale and surrounds face the added daily burden of trying to beat the suffocating socio-economic trap which most were simply born into due to the colour of their skin. The burden of unemployment and crime pushes the community backwards as any new developments are destroyed by the socio-economic challenges faced daily.

Promoting nutritional security

Without access to land and water, the residences of Helenvale are trapped in a lifestyle that is uncertain. The struggle for a basic income grant has been intensified now that covid-19 has exposed the plight of the poor.  With the need to connect community struggles against  the 52,4% of unemployed living in the Eastern Cape  in the first quarter of 2022, promoting nutritional security is key for the empowerment of the community. It is for this reason that we see an increase in maternal and infant malnutrition to actively made an impact on the double burden of malnutrition.
