Food Security in the area

KwaNobuhle is the largest township on the outskirts of Kariega, in the Eastern Cape province of the Republic of South Africa. It has been one of the townships in the region that have experienced problems with disrupted water supply or water restrictions during droughts due low levels in the Kouga Dam and Lourie Dam. This has resulted in additional pressure being put on a community that is struggling with high crime rates and unemployment.

KWANOBUHLE EMERGENCY INTERVENTION

Being a water insecure community, KwaNobuhle is in need of immediate aid as it is unable to support itself. The impact of unemployment has been exasperated by the recent drought, leaving the community in a dire situation. With the majority of households needing immediate assistance, days are spent in the tiresome pursuit of water, food and employment. Counting the cost their reality, the community is anxious as they understand the immediate health risk they are placed in. Impoverished residents who grow their own food have faced a double blow. There is so little water that there is not enough for people to bathe, let alone for their backyard vegetable plots or livestock, which are a vital supply of food and income.
