MPUMALANGA

The second-smallest province in South Africa after Gauteng, Mpumalanga occupies 6.3% of South Africa’s land area. Home to 3.5-million people it has a poverty headcount of 3.5 out of 5. The March 2022 Socio Economic Review & Outlook of Mpumalanga report shows that 50.8% are living below the lower-bound poverty line of R810 per month. This is shown in the provincial 42.7% intensity of poverty. In response to this, Operation Hunger has developed the data below to provide an updated review of the province’s drivers and determinants of Mpumalanga.

Sectoral employment in Mpumalanga

Shows that employment has decreased by 28 000 in the first quarter of 2021 following an increase of 333 000 in the previous quarter. The figure shows that employment has always decreased in the first quarter of each year since 2015, except for increases that were observed in 2015, 2017 and 2018.
