Food Security in the area

Red Location, also known as Ilali Ebomvu, is one of the oldest townships in South Africa. It is situated in the township of New Brighton in Nelson Mandela Bay, Eastern Cape. It has its characteristic red appearance due to the corrugated deep red structures of the settlement which date back to the early twentieth century. These corrugated iron structures were sourced from a de-constructed concentration camp established in Uitenhage during the Apartheid War. The recycled structures were painted red and consequently the oldest section of New Brighton became known as the Red Location.

FOOD AT MEDICINE

It is necessary to have access to healthy foods to lead an active life. With over 52,4% of people living in the Eastern Cape having been recorded as being unemployed during the first quarter of 2022  the continued increase in food prices is likely to increase the levels of vulnerability among households. With the community of Red Location looking for opportunities to develop and empower themselves, food security remains an ongoing challenge.  The immediate impact of a household’s diminished purchasing power is seen in the increasing reports of childhood malnutrition and hunger in the community.
