Food Security in the area

The Amajuba District, with a population of 556,580, experienced an average annual population growth of 1.10% between 2009 and 2019. The district has 127,000 households, 788 of which are child-headed. Approximately 12.3% of households live in informal dwellings, and 48% are headed by women. The leading causes of death for children under 5 are lower respiratory infections, diarrhea, and pre-term birth complications. For young adults aged 15-24, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS are the main causes of death. Poverty levels increased by 11.31% from 2009 to 2019, with 416,000 people living in poverty. Informal employment increased marginally, while unemployment rose by 20,200. Literacy rates improved, with more people attaining higher education. The district’s GDP grew from R12.5 billion in 2009 to R22.2 billion in 2019, contributing 2.76% to the KwaZulu-Natal Province GDP. Community services is the largest economic sector, followed by manufacturing and finance. Access to basic services, such as piped water and electricity, remains a challenge for many households in the district.
