KZN is currently facing persistent high levels of chronic hunger, household food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms impacting millions of lives and livelihoods. The biggest drivers and trends exacerbating this increase include the soaring food prices, high-level of unemployment, the economic turbulent shocks, the recent climate emergencies, the recovery from the COVID-19 that resulted in both global and national food systems disruption. Progress in remediating these drivers has been slow, and the increasing occurrence and intensity of several of these drivers will keep us on a worsening trajectory unless the risks are firmly addressed .

Operation Hunger has published a KZN Nutrition Surveillance Profile (https://operationhunger.org.za/kwa-zulu-natal/) that defines, maps and tracks the intensification of Food Security, Malnutrition and Chronic Hunger determinants, patterns, drivers, trends and their crisis hotspots for immediate detection and action in order to save lives.

This also enabled context-specific programming, which is informed by an analysis of the nutrition situation of populations in a given context (determinants, drivers and potential impact pathways )and the human and financial resources and partnerships available. The triangulation of needs, resources and partnerships allows OH to identify the results areas and programmatic priorities that are relevant to a given context.

To increase the scale of actions needed, sufficient levels of and equal access to sustainable food and nutrition security for KZN – we need you!

Please partner with us and become a Hunger Hero by supporting our sustainable nutrition programs implemented in the region.
