Fundraising during 2020

Last year we asked our people to nominate charities for us to partner with during 2020. We had a great response with a real diversity amongst the causes suggested.  The charity that received an overwhelming number of votes was Operation Hunger and we are delighted to be fundraising for them this year.

With the current circumstances around Covid-19 we want to make it as easy as possible for our Ambassador teams to drive fundraising and also for our people to make donations that’s why we have gone virtual for our fundraising efforts.  You can easily make donations through this page, the money then instantly goes to Operation Hunger.

how it works

Who we are?

Established in 1980, Operation Hunger has a history of positive action in the fight against malnutrition in South Africa’s homes, schools and communities at large. In our 40 years of working we continue to built strong partnerships with business, communities, social development agencies, civil society to enable inclusive, innovative, measurable, tailored community programming responses to eradicate hunger, household food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms.

The communities in which Operation Hunger operates are generally situated in deeply rural areas or sprawling informal settlements with little or no basic services, very few resources and minimal health care systems. In these areas, we fight malnutrition with education and skills development by training stakeholders and initiating sustainable projects that address the root of the malnutrition problem, poverty.

Operation Hunger has reached about 2.4 million lives countrywide through it’s community programs.

What is in the food parcel?

The food parcel contains the following; dry foods, tinned foods and some sanitizers amounting to R180,00 each. Each of the food hampers will have the following items; sugar, tea, milk, maize meal, samp, beans, lentils, oil, salt, beef stock, tins of fish, Dettol, protex hand soap, disposable wipes.

Where does my R200 donation go?

The cost of the food parcel is R180 , this is for the full food parcel going to the beneficiary and the R20 will assist towards the distribution costs.

Who gets the food parcel?

Beneficiaries are families within the target communities who have no source of income. These are identified by community leadership in conjunction with local relief committees and operation hunger.
Each of the affected family will receive a food hamper worth R180.00.

What is the process, start to finish?

Once the financial donation is received by operation hunger, dry bulk foods and tin foods is purchased at a local supermarket nearest to the targeted cluster of disadvantaged communities. This then gets divided into small food hampers worth R180.00 each. The food hampers will be collected and delivered by an Operation Hunger champion to each the target communities where it is then received and distributed to identified beneficiaries as listed and agreed to  by the relief committee and operation hunger. Beneficiaries will sign as they receive the food parcels .

What COVID-19 precautions are taken?

We have made sure to include Dettol, protex hand soap & disposable wipes in the parcels.

In addition beneficiaries on the other hand will have their hands sprayed with a sanitising liquid as the receive and sign for the donation.

Operation hunger will work hand in hand with relief committees that are identified by the respective communities. These committees will receive basic hygiene,  safety and prevention training from Operation Hunger before they work with the food. Then each of the participants will be equipped with a mask and latex gloves as the work with the food and do the distribution.
